"NURSE GUDRUN” Helps Swedish patients via IPTV

Trial launched using Dreampark’s middleware platform tests an innovative new way to connect patients and doctors via IPTV

Trial participants equipped with special set top boxes for their television and a broadband connection can set up a video call with Nurse Gudrun or other staff on call using a standard remote control and a web cam. All the apartments in the complex have digital TV that is linked to the local healthcare clinic through broadband. Patients can see both themselves and the care providers on screen as they speak, and the camera can be zoomed in to give more detailed explanations of a patient’s condition. This not only saves time and effort, but money, as the typical visit to the clinic costs patients about €150.

”This is a great complement to the personal service we provide on site at the clinic,” says Gudrun Håkansson, the project’s namesake, who is one of numerous medical personnel at the clinic taking part in the trial. “Many simple questions and ailments can be cleared up via TV, just by checking in with the patient,” she notes. Medical staff also have immediate access to the patient’s medical records via the healthcare network.

”I just need to turn to the Healthcare Channel and wait for Nurse Gudrun to appear on the screen,” says Roland Hultgren, one of the trial participants, who also manages the apartment complex for senior cititzens. ”Now we don’t have to actually go to the healthcare clinic for routine examinations and minor concerns,” he adds.
